Performance Summary of the S&P 500 in 2020
The S&P 500 is a market-weighted index, reflecting the largest 500 stocks (large-cap) in the US. It is the index that most professional investors measure their performance against. If we review the S&P 500 performance during 2020, and taking into consideration the market crash that took place in the first quarter of 2020, the S&P 500 ended the year on 16.26% growth, an amazing year given the drop off it had in Q1. The top performers that drove this growth and spearheaded the recovery were:
- Nvidia -121.9%
- PayPal – 116.5%
- L Brands – 105.5%
- Albermarie Corp. 102.1%
- Advance Micro Devices 99.8%
- Freeport McMoRan – 98.6%
The performance of the S&P 500 would have been even more spectacular if you had included the performance of both Tesla and Etsy, however, Tesla and Etsy only listed in the last four months of 2020.
